Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport upgrade will be ready for takeoff in weeks, says Oyo Acting Governor Abdulraheem Lawal, alongside Circular Road progress

The Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport upgrade in Oyo State is set to be ready for takeoff and landing within the next two to three weeks, Acting Governor Abdulraheem Lawal has disclosed.

Lawal made the announcement on Monday after inspecting ongoing work at the airport and the Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road project.

Describing both as legacy projects vital to Governor Seyi Makinde’s vision for economic growth, Lawal expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work.

According to the Acting Governor, about 75 to 76 per cent of the airport upgrade has been completed.

The major runway work is done, with remaining tasks including runway marking and installation of the instrument landing system for night operations.

The circular road, spanning 32.5km, is expected to be ready within two to three months, showcasing extensive civil engineering feats like hydraulic bridges and culverts.

Lawal emphasised continuous government engagement with contractors to ensure momentum is maintained and funding remains steady for the projects’ completion.

“Both projects are legacy projects, and by the end of this year, we believe they will be delivered,” he stated, adding the airport could potentially be operational for the upcoming Olubadan coronation event — though final clearance lies with experts and contractors.

The airport, initially known as Ibadan Airport, was renamed Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport and budgeted at N41 billion.
