Nigerian sex offender arrested

Nigerian sex offender arrested by ICE in San Antonio as U.S. authorities warn immigrants about crime-linked deportation consequences

Nigerian sex offender arrested—that’s the update from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which has confirmed the detention of 31-year-old Chinomso Uma Ochie in San Antonio, Texas, over a sexual offence involving a minor.

ICE made the announcement on Tuesday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a photo of Mr Ochie and stating that the Nigerian national had been apprehended as part of its ongoing efforts to remove immigrants who violate U.S. laws, particularly those involving crimes against children.

“Being allowed to remain in the U.S. is a privilege,” the agency said in a stern warning to other immigrants.

“Anyone who violates the conditions of their admission by committing crimes against children can be arrested and lose their benefits, like sex offender Mr Ochie.”

Although details of Mr Ochie’s offence remain limited, ICE has made clear that his arrest aligns with broader enforcement actions targeting individuals considered a threat to public safety.

His arrest comes just days after another U.S.-based Nigerian, Theophilis Anwana, was handed a 20-year prison sentence for second-degree rape, underscoring the growing scrutiny on non-citizens with criminal convictions in the U.S.

The clampdown forms part of an intensified immigration and public safety strategy that began under the Trump administration and continues to shape enforcement priorities today.

Mr Ochie is expected to face removal proceedings in line with U.S. immigration law.
