NBA EFCC anti-corruption partnership strengthened as legal and enforcement agencies pledge deeper collaboration and focus on politically exposed persons

NBA EFCC anti-corruption partnership took a significant leap forward on Tuesday, 16 September 2025, as officials from both bodies agreed to deepen their cooperation in Nigeria’s fight against corruption.

The chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ilorin Branch, Barrister Sulyman Kosemani, led a delegation to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) Ilorin Zonal Office, where they met with Zonal Director Daniel Isei to discuss ways to enhance collaboration.

While commending the existing synergy between the EFCC and legal practitioners in Kwara State, Kosemani emphasised the need for a more robust partnership.

He called on the EFCC to sharpen its focus on politically exposed persons (PEPs), especially public officials, to ensure strict accountability in managing the increased monthly financial allocations to the state following fuel subsidy removal.

Kosemani also urged greater involvement of lawyers in EFCC activities, believing that their participation would ensure smoother and more effective anti-corruption efforts.

Responding warmly, Isei described lawyers as “indispensable allies” in the Commission’s mission. He affirmed, “Lawyers and law enforcement agents cannot do without each other.

We can achieve more together through synergy.”

However, Isei cautioned legal practitioners against interfering with investigations, stressing the importance of supporting the EFCC with credible intelligence, particularly in high-profile cases.

He reminded them of their ethical responsibility as ministers in the temple of justice, urging them to offer sound counsel and avoid frivolous applications designed to delay justice.

He concluded by assuring that the EFCC remains open to collaboration with lawyers and other stakeholders, committed to maintaining professionalism and integrity.
