68 inmates pass NECO exam in Kano Correctional Centre under state-funded rehabilitation programme, marking progress in prison reform and education

68 Inmates Pass NECO Exam under a state-sponsored rehabilitation initiative at the Kano Correctional Centre, in a milestone achievement hailed as a powerful testament to reform through education.

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, confirmed the results on Monday.

Public Relations Officer CSC Musbahu Lawan said the examination success was recorded under the Centre for Inmates’ Continuity Education, fully funded by the Kano State Government.

“This feat reflects the implementation of the Correctional Service Act, 2019, which promotes inmate rehabilitation through structured academic and vocational training,” said Lawan.

The initiative also aligns with the nationwide directive of the Controller General of Corrections, CGC Sylvester Indidi-Nwakuche, who has urged all custodial centres to ensure inmates are engaged in meaningful educational programmes.

“These efforts aim to equip inmates with the skills and knowledge needed to reintegrate into society as productive citizens,” he added, noting the synergy with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

The successful candidates expressed excitement, calling the experience transformative. “This is a turning point in our lives,” one inmate reportedly said.

The Controller of Corrections in Kano, Mr Ado Inuwa, congratulated the candidates and reiterated the command’s commitment to the reformation and empowerment of inmates.

Chairperson of the Prerogative of Mercy, Hajiya Azumi Namadi-Bebeje, also commended the inmates for their achievement and praised Governor Abba Yusuf for funding the programme.

“This success underscores the governor’s compassion and dedication to inmate welfare. Education is the foundation of positive transformation, and these inmates have taken a critical step forward,” she said.
