Yoruba Day in Switzerland celebrates heritage proudly as the diaspora showcases culture, unity and identity in Geneva with royal and diplomatic support

Yoruba Day in Switzerland was celebrated with grandeur on 27 September 2025 in Geneva, where vibrant cultural displays and community spirit brought the city alive.

Designed as a platform to preserve the Yoruba people’s rich cultural legacy, the celebration underscored the importance of passing down traditions to future generations, irrespective of where they reside across the globe.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the event was the inclusive presence of Nigerians from other ethnic groups, along with international well-wishers, who joined the Yoruba community in solidarity.

The Royal Father of the Day, His Majesty Professor Adeyemi Obalanlege, Olota of Otta, commended the community for its commitment to sustaining cultural identity in the diaspora.

He urged Yoruba families abroad to continue hosting such events, particularly for the benefit of younger generations who may not regularly visit Nigeria.

Kabiyesi Olota also expressed deep appreciation for the support of Igbo and Hausa attendees, describing their participation as a commendable act of national unity, deserving of recognition and emulation.

Organisers of the festival praised His Majesty for his consistent leadership and unwavering dedication to cultural preservation, both at home and abroad.

They described him as a royal father whose integrity, dignity and vision continue to inspire Yoruba communities across continents.

Distinguished guests included Mr Olumuyiwa Ogundemi, Charge d’Affaires and Minister at the Nigerian Embassy in Bern, alongside Engr. Oluyemi Ogundele, Coordinator of the Adire Carnival in Austria, among others.

His Majesty was accompanied by Olori Oloruntoyin Obalanlege and notable chiefs from Otta.

Now firmly established as an annual tradition, Yoruba Day in Switzerland has become a significant platform for cultural preservation, identity promotion and community bonding.
