Okene–Auchi road abduction ends with eight passengers rescued as security forces intensify efforts to free the remaining hostages

Okene–Auchi road abduction has taken a dramatic turn as a joint team of police operatives and military personnel rescued eight passengers who were kidnapped along the Kogi State highway.

The victims were among 23 passengers travelling in a Toyota Hiace commuter bus belonging to Big Joe Ventures Ltd (registration Edo FUG 13 XY) when gunmen ambushed the vehicle on Saturday, September 27, 2025.

Reports indicate that most passengers were young lawyers returning to Auchi from Abuja. The kidnappers reportedly demanded a ransom of ₦100 million per victim.

Confirming the incident, the Kogi State Police Command spokesperson, SP William Ayah, stated that 12 passengers were abducted during the attack.

Swift action by the Divisional Police Officer in Okene, CSP Nasir Muhammad, led to the rescue of eight victims, including the driver.

“Immediately after the abduction, the DPO mobilised police personnel in conjunction with the military and local vigilantes to pursue the kidnappers. In the process, eight victims, including the driver, were rescued.

Efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining four victims and apprehend the culprits,” Ayah said.

Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the rescue on Sunday, assuring that security forces are intensifying operations to ensure the safe return of those still in captivity.

The attack has renewed concerns over rising insecurity on major highways across Nigeria, particularly routes linking the Federal Capital Territory with the South.

Authorities have urged travellers to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies to prevent further incidents.
