In a statement released on Sunday to mark World Teachers’ Day 2025, the First Lady praised teachers for their tireless dedication to nation-building, describing them as “true heroes, shaping minds, nurturing dreams, and guiding generations.”

She said this year’s theme, “Focusing on the Global Teacher Shortage,” was a timely reminder of the need to invest more in the profession, empower teaching staff, and inspire a new generation of educators.

“The shortage of teachers is a challenge we must confront with urgency, by empowering educators, investing in their growth, and inspiring more to join this noble profession,” Mrs Tinubu said.

Identifying herself as a lifelong teacher, she expressed deep admiration for those committed to the classroom despite global challenges. “As a lifelong teacher myself, I salute you all on this special day. Happy World Teachers’ Day 2025,” she added.

Her message highlighted the crucial role of teachers in shaping societies and called for collective responsibility from governments, institutions, and communities to improve teachers’ welfare and professional development.

World Teachers’ Day, observed annually on 5 October, was established in 1994 to commemorate the signing of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers a milestone document recognising the essential contribution of educators worldwide.
