Moyo Ogunlewe warns buyers to avoid land too close to power lines, canals, or roads. Ignorance is no defence when purchasing property

Barrister Moyo Ogunlewe has urged Nigerians to exercise extreme caution when purchasing land, highlighting crucial safety distances that must be respected.

Ogunlewe insists that land located less than 45 metres from power lines should be avoided at all costs. Similarly, he advises against buying land within 30 metres of any canal, warning of potential risks and legal complications.

He also stresses the importance of maintaining a minimum distance of 70 metres from any federal, state, or local road.

“The land must meet these safety criteria. If not, don’t buy,” Ogunlewe emphasised. He added a powerful reminder: ignorance is no defence when it comes to property laws and safety regulations.

This advice comes as a critical reminder for land buyers to perform thorough due diligence before committing to any purchase, ensuring their investment is both safe and legally sound.

Ogunlewe’s warning highlights the potential dangers of overlooking fundamental safety distances in land transactions.

The barrister’s message is clear and firm — taking shortcuts or ignoring essential safety guidelines can have costly consequences. His call to action serves as an urgent wake-up call for buyers to prioritise safety and legality.
