In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos, the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, stressed that the bloc’s relationship with Nigeria is rooted in solidarity, respect, and mutual interest rather than external pressure.

Mignot noted that the EU respects Nigeria’s sovereignty and recognises its constitutional pledge to religious neutrality.

He said the Union’s engagement is focused on helping the country strengthen stability, reinforce democratic values, and promote peaceful coexistence among its diverse communities.

He emphasised that the EU’s partnership is built on a shared aspiration for a stable and prosperous Nigeria, rather than being shaped by the rhetoric or policies of other nations.

“Our position is one of solidarity with Nigeria — solidarity with victims of violence, with authorities working to protect citizens, and with the Nigerian people who overwhelmingly desire peace beyond ethnic and religious divides,” Mignot said.

The ambassador revealed that preparations are underway for a high-level peace, security, and defence dialogue between Nigeria and the EU to deepen cooperation on counterterrorism and regional stability.

He added that the EU would continue supporting peacebuilding programmes, including the deradicalisation and reintegration of former fighters in the North-East, while promoting interfaith understanding through civil society engagement.

According to Mignot, Nigeria’s legal and institutional frameworks provide a solid foundation for the protection of human rights, despite ongoing challenges.

He described the EU’s approach as principled and “steady,” reaffirming that the country’s future “lies firmly in the hands of Nigerians themselves.”

With this clear message of partnership, the EU appears determined to maintain a constructive role in Nigeria’s pursuit of peace, prosperity, and inclusive governance — a stance that signals confidence and optimism amid international scrutiny.
