Wike naval officer confrontation sparks outrage as Nigerian military veterans demand apology for minister’s verbal abuse during enforcement visit

Wike naval officer confrontation has drawn sharp criticism from a coalition of Nigerian military veterans, who condemned the FCT Minister for verbally insulting a naval officer during an enforcement visit to disputed land in Abuja.

Footage obtained by our correspondent shows Wike in a heated exchange with naval personnel at a site in the Gaduwa area.

The minister questioned the officers’ presence, alleging they were supporting an illegal development. One officer responded that they were acting on orders and that the land belonged to a former Chief of Naval Staff.

The verbal altercation escalated, with Wike reportedly using harsh language against the officer. Reactions online were mixed, with some criticising the officer and others defending his conduct.

In a statement, coalition spokesperson Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts said a public office holder should not insult uniformed officers carrying out official duties.

“How can a public office holder call an officer ‘a fool’ on camera? He should have engaged the Chief of Naval Staff privately rather than attempting to disgrace a retired senior officer,” he said.

The veterans stressed that military officers represent the authority of the state and that disrespecting them undermines public institutions.

They also rejected calls for disciplinary action against the officer, warning of direct protest if any punitive measures were taken.

Durowaiye-Herberts insisted Wike should apologise, noting, “Wike’s action demeans the dignity of the office of a minister. It is not acceptable behaviour.”
