Laura Ikeji Detty December price hikes spark debate as the entrepreneur condemns excessive festive charges by Nigerian businesses

Beauty entrepreneur and social media influencer Laura Ikeji Kanu has criticised Nigerian business owners for what she described as greedy and excessive price increases ahead of the annual Detty December festivities.

Laura Ikeji Kanu made the remarks in a public statement shared online, warning that unchecked profiteering could undermine the festive season that attracts thousands of visitors and fuels economic activity across Lagos and other major cities.

The entrepreneur said the steep rise in service charges, ranging from accommodation and transportation to leisure and beauty services, reflects a troubling culture of short-term gain over long-term sustainability.

Laura Ikeji Kanu argued that the festive period should be an opportunity for businesses to build customer loyalty and showcase professionalism, not exploit heightened demand.

She warned that inflated pricing risks discouraging both locals and returning Nigerians in the diaspora, many of whom plan their holidays around Detty December events.

The beauty entrepreneur noted that while businesses are entitled to profit from increased demand, moderation remains essential to preserve the appeal and credibility of the season.

Her comments have sparked widespread reactions online, with many social media users echoing concerns about rising costs and calling for fairer pricing practices.

Detty December has become a powerful cultural and economic phenomenon, drawing entertainers, tourists and investors to Nigeria each year.

Industry observers say its continued success depends on balancing profitability with value and trust.
