FCCPC lifts seal on Ikeja Electric after the firm agrees to resolve consumer complaints and comply with regulatory directives

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has lifted the seal placed on the headquarters of Ikeja Electric Plc after the electricity distribution company agreed to comply with regulatory directives and address outstanding consumer rights violations.

The decision was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by the Director of Corporate Affairs of the Commission, Ondaje Ijagwu, following a binding undertaking by Ikeja Electric to submit to a remedial process within agreed timelines.

The FCCPC said the power firm committed to resolving all consumer complaints formally referred to it by the Commission, warning that any breach of the undertaking would attract renewed and escalated enforcement actions under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act.

The headquarters of Ikeja Electric had been sealed on December 11 after the company failed to comply with a directive of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to unbundle a Maximum Demand account into 20 separate accounts for a customer who had reportedly been without electricity supply for more than two and a half years.

Explaining the rationale behind the intervention, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the FCCPC, Tunji Bello, said the action was necessary to uphold the provisions of the FCCPA 2018 and protect consumers from prolonged harm.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that consumers are treated fairly and that service providers comply with lawful decisions and directives,” Bello said.

He stressed that enforcement actions were not punitive for their own sake, but a means to secure compliance and accountability.

“Enforcement is not an end in itself. Where compliance is achieved and credible commitments are made, the Commission will respond appropriately,” he added.

The FCCPC noted that the resolution reflected its balanced but firm regulatory approach, emphasising that while it remains open to constructive engagement with service providers, it will not hesitate to act decisively where consumer rights are violated.

“We intervene decisively where consumer harm persists, and we de-escalate where enforceable compliance is secured,” Bello said. “What remains constant is our duty to protect consumers and uphold regulatory accountability.”

The Commission reiterated its commitment to monitoring Ikeja Electric’s compliance with the agreed remedial measures to ensure affected consumers receive prompt and fair resolution.
