ICAN Mowe urges government to show tax dividends

ICAN Mowe District urges FG to ensure Nigerians see tangible benefits from taxes as new law is implemented, stressing infrastructure and essential services

The immediate past president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and grand patron of ICAN Mowe District, Davidson Alaribe, has called on the Federal Government to ensure that Nigerians benefit from the taxes they pay, as the implementation of the new tax law begins.

Alaribe made the remarks at the end-of-year party of ICAN Mowe District, held at its permanent site along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Saturday.

He emphasised that while the new tax law aims to bring all taxable Nigerians into compliance, patriotism must be matched by government action to provide essential services.

Alaribe said, “The issue is that the government wants to bring everyone into the tax net, provided you earn an income, as is done in advanced countries.

Everyone will comply, and tax professionals, who are chartered accountants, will advise our clients to do so.

“We also advise the government that it should show dividends of democracy. If you collect money from people, you should also ensure that infrastructure is put in place, our roads, security, and many other necessities.”

The ICAN Mowe District chairman, Adekemi Adekunle, noted that the celebration was a time to reflect and appreciate God’s goodness upon members.

She highlighted the district’s achievements over the year, including training members on the new tax law to enhance their professional capacity.

Adekunle said, “We are here today to celebrate and thank God for the success of the year. We have remained committed to the welfare of our members, and we have also increased our membership strength by 20 new members.

“We have been involved in capacity building for our members through technical sessions to upskill them on the new tax law and ensure they benefit from the opportunities it brings to professionals.”

The event also provided an opportunity to commend the district’s progress during the outgoing year and encourage members to strive for greater achievements in the new year.
