UUTH resident doctors to join nationwide strike over unmet demands

UUTH resident doctors strike set for January 12, 2026, over unpaid arrears, unimplemented allowances, and unresolved professional demands

The Association of Resident Doctors at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital has announced its participation in the nationwide strike declared by the National Association of Resident Doctors, effective Monday, January 12, 2026.

The decision was made during an emergency general meeting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and confirmed in a communiqué signed by President Dr Ekomobong Udoh and General Secretary Dr Kenneth Ikott. The communiqué stated that the hospital centre would commence a peaceful protest by 9 a.m. within UUTH premises, in compliance with the directives of NARD.

“The centre fully supports the implementation of the NARD NEC meeting resolutions,” the communiqué read. “Members will participate in the Total, Indefinite and Comprehensive Strike 2.0 from 12 noon on Monday, under the slogan ‘No Implementation, No Going Back.’”

The strike action follows the Federal Government’s failure to implement the Memorandum of Understanding signed with resident doctors in November 2025. Dr Udoh explained that the industrial action would continue until all minimum demands are fully met.

Key demands include the reinstatement of the FTH Lokoja Five, payment of promotion and salary arrears, full implementation of the professional allowance schedule as captured in the 2026 budget, and official clarification on skipping and entry-level issues by the Federal Ministry of Health.

Additional demands are the reintroduction of the Specialist Allowance, resolution of house officers’ salary delays and arrears, recategorisation of membership certificates, issuance of NPMCN certificates after Part I, commencement of locum and work-hours regulation committees, and timely resumption and conclusion of the Collective Bargaining Agreement process.

The Association stressed that the strike will be strictly peaceful, targeting hospital management offices within UUTH, and urged the government to address the concerns to avert further disruptions to healthcare services.
