Kano State Hospital suspends three staff after surgical scissors were left in patient’s body, prompting investigation into negligence
The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has suspended three medical personnel at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre after a surgical error resulted in the death of Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, on January 11.

The Board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, said a preliminary investigation ordered by Executive Secretary Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda confirmed that surgical scissors were left inside Umar’s body during a medical procedure.
“The Board extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late Aishatu Umar and sympathizes with them over this painful loss. We reassure the public that negligence will not be condoned in any form,” the statement read.
The case has been referred to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for further investigation and disciplinary action, in accordance with professional standards and the law.
Umar’s husband, Abubakar Muhammad, said his wife experienced severe complications following the surgery, which ultimately led to her death despite repeated complaints to the hospital.
