Impeachment: Will prayers save Fubara?

Rivers Governor Fubara pledges peace, safety and stability as he addresses guests at the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament finals

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara pledged on Saturday not to support, directly or indirectly, any action capable of undermining peace and public safety in the state, reaffirming that the protection of lives and property remains the foremost responsibility of his administration.

Governor Fubara made the declaration while speaking as Special Guest at the finals of the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament, held in the state capital, Port Harcourt.

The governor stressed that he remains firmly in office and committed to delivering on the promises made to the people of Rivers State, despite ongoing political tensions.

“What is important is that I am still the Governor of Rivers State, and we will continue to do what we have promised the Rivers people,” Governor Fubara said.

He expressed satisfaction that the week-long polo tournament was concluded without any security incident, describing the peaceful atmosphere as compelling evidence that Rivers State is safe for residents, visitors and investors.

Governor Fubara said the successful hosting of the tournament underscored the effectiveness of his administration’s security efforts and the government’s resolve to maintain stability across the state.

“I am happy that you had your tournament for one week, and the president of the Port Harcourt Polo Club told me there was no incident.

It shows that we are working and that Rivers State is safe. That is the basic responsibility of government,” he added.

However, the governor voiced disappointment over recurring political crises in the state, noting that they have coincided with the annual polo tournament for the past three years.

He recalled that the 2024 and 2025 editions were similarly affected by political developments, describing the situation as unfortunate and disruptive to what should be a celebratory sporting tradition.

Despite the challenges, Governor Fubara assured that his administration would continue to discharge its duties responsibly and support individuals and groups genuinely committed to the progress and unity of Rivers State.

The governor also announced plans to work towards upgrading the status of the Port Harcourt Polo Club, which is widely regarded as having one of the best natural grass polo pitches in Nigeria.

In a message to visiting guests and international players, Governor Fubara encouraged participants to enjoy the serenity of Port Harcourt and to help counter negative narratives about the state by sharing accurate and positive experiences.

The final match attracted dignitaries including the Argentine Ambassador to Nigeria, alongside polo players from across Nigeria, with teams from India and Argentina participating in the week-long tournament.
