Lagos, MTN partner to redevelop Obalende under-bridge bus hub

Lagos partners with MTN to redevelop Obalende under-bridge into Y’ELLO Bus Park, a modern, secure, and sustainable transport hub

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday announced plans to redevelop the Obalende under-bridge into a modern transport hub, to be known as Y’ELLO Bus Park, in partnership with MTN Nigeria.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the project in a statement posted on his verified X handle.

Mr Wahab said the redevelopment aims to transform the previously degraded and unsafe space into a functional, secure, and community-focused facility for commuters and residents.

According to the commissioner, the hub will feature a regulated transport terminal, a recycling drop-off station, and a road camp for Lagos Waste Management Authority sweepers and security agencies.

More than 60 public toilet fixtures, kiosks, and other essential amenities will serve residents and commuters.

The design prioritises safety, health, and aesthetics. Solar-powered lighting will improve night-time visibility, reduce blind spots, and enhance CCTV coverage to curb criminal activity.

A biodigester system will sustainably manage wastewater, while a dedicated recycling station will discourage illegal waste disposal.

The project aligns with Lagos State’s climate responsibility agenda, with solar panels supporting energy efficiency and tree planting set to improve air quality and enhance the environment’s visual appeal.

Mr Wahab said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to reclaiming public spaces and making them functional, sustainable, and safe.

The Obalende redevelopment follows recent enforcement actions, during which squatters were evicted and illegal structures cleared under the bridge, PUNCH Online reports.
