Nike Art Gallery founder’s daughter addresses online backlash after IShowSpeed’s visit, calling out false narratives and social media assumptions

The daughter of the Nike Art Gallery has responded to online criticism following the recent visit of American streamer IShowSpeed to the Lagos-based cultural hub.

In a statement shared publicly, she explained that many commentators had drawn conclusions without watching the full video of the visit, which led to what she described as the propagation of a false narrative.

“I believe most of the critics are just running with a story that isn’t true,” she said, emphasising that the gallery’s intentions were misunderstood.

The controversy arose after IShowSpeed was seen selecting a name during the visit.

Some social media users alleged the streamer showed bias in choosing a Yoruba name, which was later shared widely online, triggering reactions that targeted the gallery and its staff.

The gallery representative encouraged the public to seek full context before forming opinions and warned against amplifying misinformation.

She also expressed disappointment at the way the situation was handled on social media.

“The conversation online missed the larger picture. Our goal is to celebrate art and culture, not to be embroiled in online disputes,” she said.

The incident highlights the challenges of managing public perception in the age of viral social media content, particularly when cultural and ethnic sensitivities are involved.
