American rapper and songwriter Kendrick Lamar has emerged as the most nominated artist ahead of the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, after the Recording Academy unveiled its nominations on Thursday.

The Kendrick Lamar Grammy nominations total nine, placing him at the top of this year’s field and reinforcing his commanding presence across the industry’s most competitive categories.

Pop icon Lady Gaga follows with seven nominations, while Bad Bunny, Sabrina Carpenter, and R&B singer-songwriter Leon Thomas are tied with six nominations each, underscoring a diverse and fiercely contested awards season.

The Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled to hold on Sunday in Los Angeles, bringing together the world’s leading music stars for what organisers have described as one of the most competitive editions in recent years.

In the prestigious Album of the Year category, Kendrick Lamar’s GNX will compete against releases from Bad Bunny, Justin Bieber, Sabrina Carpenter, Clipse, Lady Gaga, Leon Thomas and Tyler, The Creator.

Lamar also features prominently in Record of the Year and Song of the Year, where his collaboration luther with SZA has earned nominations in both categories, highlighting the track’s critical and commercial impact.

The Best New Artist category showcases a strong mix of emerging global talent, including Olivia Dean, KATSEYE, The Marías and Leon Thomas, reflecting the Recording Academy’s widening musical lens.

Pop and rap categories remain tightly packed, with Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber and Chappell Roan competing in pop performance and album fields, while Lamar faces competition from Clipse, JID, GloRilla and Tyler, The Creator in rap categories.

The global reach of the Grammys was further emphasised in the Best Global Music Album category, where Nigerian superstar Burna Boy earned a nomination for No Sign of Weakness, alongside projects from Youssou N’Dour, Anoushka Shankar and others.

Music videos and collaborative performances also feature prominently, with cross-genre partnerships and visually ambitious productions earning recognition.

With Kendrick Lamar leading the field and several heavyweight artists closely behind, anticipation is building for a night expected to deliver powerful performances, emotional speeches and defining moments in contemporary music.
