Manchester City defeat Newcastle 3-1 to reach the League Cup final, setting up a March 22 showdown with Arsenal at Wembley

Manchester City will face Arsenal in the League Cup final after ending Newcastle United’s reign as holders with a first-half blitz in a 3-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium.

City went into the second leg in pole position following a first-leg win on Tyneside in January and finished the job with clinical efficiency.

Omar Marmoush struck twice in the first half, either side of a goal from Tijjani Reijnders, putting the hosts firmly in control.

Anthony Elanga reduced the deficit after the interval, but a 5-1 aggregate score confirmed City’s place in the final.

The League Cup showpiece at Wembley is scheduled for March 22, with Arsenal securing their spot after eliminating Chelsea on Tuesday.

The victory offered Guardiola a welcome boost following the frustration of surrendering a two-goal lead in Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Tottenham, which delivered a setback to City’s Premier League title challenge. City trail Arsenal by six points ahead of a crucial clash with Liverpool this weekend.

This will be Manchester City’s first League Cup final since 2021. Guardiola lifted the trophy with City for the first time in 2018 against Arsenal, when current Gunners manager Mikel Arteta served as his assistant. City went on to win the competition for the following three years before a brief hiatus.

Guardiola, who recently defended the club against claims that its success is solely down to financial muscle, fielded a rotated squad with Erling Haaland, Rodri, and Rayan Cherki on the bench to manage fitness ahead of Sunday’s Liverpool trip.

Marmoush’s early strike, which deflected off a Newcastle defender, set the tone for City’s dominant display.

Newcastle briefly threatened, with goalkeeper James Trafford making vital saves from Joe Willock and Anthony Gordon, but City’s dominance was established before half-time.

Marmoush doubled the lead in the 29th minute, heading in from close range after Kieran Trippier failed to clear, before Reijnders added a third in the 32nd minute.

City eased off in the second half, allowing Elanga to score in the 62nd minute, but the result was never in doubt. Guardiola will now look to end City’s brief trophy drought against Arsenal at Wembley.
