Lagos Police harassment reported after officers detained a young man carrying a legitimate phone gift on a public bus in Ajao, Lagos
Lagos Police have been accused of harassing a young man while travelling on a public bus in Ajao, Lagos, on Monday, February 16, 2026.

The alleged incident involved officers identified as Daniel I. and Isaac J., who reportedly stopped the bus under a bridge near the 7 and 8 bus stop, removed three passengers, and questioned the source of a new phone carried by one of them.
The complainant, the young man’s sister, provided receipts via WhatsApp confirming that the phone was a legitimate gift purchased online.
Despite this, the officers allegedly refused to release him and insisted he print the receipts before they would consider letting him go.
The family claims that two officers cocked their firearms during the encounter, raising serious safety concerns.
The sister further alleged that officers demanded a bribe or submission to plead for release, describing the actions as “criminal and unprofessional.”
The officers reportedly refused to provide details of their office or jurisdiction.
The incident has sparked public outcry on social media, with citizens questioning police conduct and the treatment of innocent travellers in Lagos.
Legal observers warn that such behaviour could amount to abuse of authority if verified.
The Nigeria Police Force has yet to respond to requests for comment.

Civil society organisations have called for an immediate investigation, emphasising the importance of transparency, accountability, and protection of citizens’ rights.
