A law firm issues a ₦15m defamation demand over an alleged false rape accusation published on social media

C. Anekwe & Associates, Barristers and Solicitors, has issued a formal ₦15m defamation demand against Adewale Adeola Adeife of the Department of English Language and Literature, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, over an alleged false rape accusation published on social media against its client, Mr Ojuko Adefesobi David.

In a letter dated February 22, 2026, the firm stated that it acts on behalf of Mr Ojuko Adefesobi David and accused Adewale Adeola Adeife of circulating defamatory content on or about February 17.

The publication allegedly included Mr David’s phone number and portrayed him as a rapist across various platforms, including WhatsApp.

According to the letter, the allegation triggered widespread public backlash, reputational harm and emotional distress, as well as the loss of business opportunities.

The solicitors described the claim as entirely false, malicious and lacking any factual foundation.

The firm asserted that the social media posts exposed its client to ridicule, threats and harassment among family members, associates, colleagues and the wider public.

Although an apology was reportedly issued through a video recording, the solicitors argued that the injury caused by the publication remains substantial and ongoing.

Under the ₦15m defamation demand, the firm is seeking payment of ₦15,000,000 in damages for alleged harm suffered.

It is also requesting a written apology and full retraction to be prominently published on all platforms where the allegation appeared, immediate removal of all related content, and a written undertaking to cease and desist from further defamatory statements.

The recipient has been given 14 days from receipt of the letter to comply. The firm warned that failure to do so may result in legal proceedings seeking aggravated and exemplary damages, injunctive relief and litigation costs.

The correspondence stated that the notice was issued without prejudice to the client’s rights and remedies under Nigerian law.
