The visit took place on 26 February 2026, following Senator Mpigi’s death last week at the age of 64 after a brief illness.

Accompanied by his two sons, Jordan and Joaquin, Wike visited the late senator’s wife, Patricia Obiageri Mpigi, and their children.

The delegation included Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martin Amaewhule, Senators Magnus Abe, Allwell Onyesoh and Olaka Nwogu, as well as Rivers State PDP Chairman Aaron Chukwuemeka, Felix Nweke, Kenneth Chikere and Hon. Dum Deekor.

Wike described Senator Mpigi as “a dependable ally who stood by his friends, even during trying times” and emphasised that his passing is a loss not only to the Ogoni people but to the entire nation.

He assured the family of the delegation’s commitment to a befitting burial, stating, “We will play our own part. We will not forget Bari. We will ensure that he is accorded a befitting burial.”

During the condolence visit, Wike reflected on his close working relationship with Mpigi, recounting his strength and dedication in public service.

“There is nobody among us that does not know the impact of Barinada Mpigi. When he says he is your friend, he is your friend. He stands with his friends through thick and thin,” Wike said.

Patricia Mpigi expressed gratitude for the support, thanking the Minister for always standing by the family during their time of grief.
