NNPP alliance with ADC confirmed as party plans joint strategy for 2027 elections while still fielding candidates in other races

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on Monday, 30 March 2026, confirmed plans to form a political alliance with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, in a development that signals a significant realignment within Nigeria’s opposition landscape.

The announcement was made by the NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, where he explained that the NNPP alliance with ADC is aimed at presenting a unified front in the presidential contest while maintaining participation in other electoral categories.

According to Johnson, the party may not field its own presidential candidate in the 2027 elections, but it will continue to present candidates at subnational levels and other positions on the ballot. He described the arrangement as a strategic collaboration designed to strengthen opposition forces.

Johnson also confirmed that former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has defected from the NNPP to the ADC and is expected to officially register with the party in Kano State.

He noted that extensive consultations preceded the decision, suggesting that the move forms part of broader negotiations among opposition figures.

The NNPP spokesperson further argued that the alignment is motivated by a shared objective among opposition leaders to offer Nigerians an alternative platform ahead of the next general elections.

He maintained that internal decisions and realignments within the party would not weaken its structure or electoral prospects.

The development highlights ongoing political manoeuvring as parties position themselves ahead of 2027, with alliances and defections continuing to reshape party strength and influence across the country.

Analysts say such coalitions could play a decisive role in determining the competitiveness of the upcoming presidential race.
