The African Action Congress (AAC) on Friday, October 30, 2026, raised an alarm over an alleged attack on its 2027 presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, and members of his campaign team at a restaurant in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, claiming that armed men had abducted the activist and that his whereabouts were unknown.
The party described the incident, reportedly occurring at about 1pm, as a serious security concern and called on the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant authorities to establish what happened and ensure the safety of those affected.

In a statement signed by Abdulkareem Musa, spokesperson for the Sowore/Magashi Presidential Election Campaign, the campaign demanded an immediate investigation and appropriate protective measures.
“We demand an immediate security assessment, appropriate protective measures and a thorough investigation into the incident. The authorities must not wait for a tragedy before taking preventive action,” the statement read.
The campaign also warned against the use of violence and intimidation in political activities ahead of the 2027 general election.
“Politics and elections are not warfare. No political actor or party has the right to engage violence, intimidation or attacks on citizens exercising their democratic rights,” it added.
The development was also reported on Sowore’s official social media account, where the campaign alleged that armed men had taken the activist away.
“Armed thugs kidnap Sowore. His current location is unknown!” the post stated.
However, the circumstances surrounding the reported attack and alleged abduction remained unclear at the time of filing this report.
The campaign further warned that any harm to Sowore or members of his team would be unacceptable, insisting that those responsible must be identified and held accountable.
The alleged attack comes as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 presidential election, raising fresh concerns about the safety of political candidates, supporters and campaign officials.
Sowore, a human rights activist and publisher of SaharaReporters, had travelled to Ekiti State for presidential campaign activities on Thursday, October 29.
His campaign visit was also cited as the reason for his absence from proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he is facing a cyberbullying case involving President Bola Tinubu.
During Thursday’s proceedings, his lawyer, T.O. Etonyeaku, informed the court that the activist had travelled to Ekiti for campaign engagements.
Justice Mohammed Umar subsequently adjourned the case until November 3, 2026, for the continuation of proceedings.
Sowore’s involvement in the 2027 presidential race follows his earlier declaration of interest in contesting the election under the AAC platform.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has included his name on its published list of presidential candidates for the election.
He previously contested the Nigerian presidency in 2019 and 2023, making the 2027 election another attempt to secure the country’s highest political office.
The reported incident has placed renewed attention on political security as parties and candidates intensify preparations for the next general election.
The AAC’s appeal to security agencies comes amid concerns that attacks, intimidation and political violence could undermine the participation of candidates and supporters in the electoral process.
For now, the immediate priority remains establishing the circumstances of the reported incident, confirming Sowore’s whereabouts and ensuring the safety of everyone involved.
