Obi Kwankwaso Movement launch signals new opposition coalition as supporters unveil nationwide structure ahead of ADC presidential primaries

Supporters of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso on Monday in Abuja unveiled a new political pressure group known as the Obi–Kwankwaso Movement, marking a fresh development ahead of the African Democratic Congress presidential primaries.

The group announced that it has established structures across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with coordinators appointed at both state and zonal levels to drive nationwide mobilisation.

Speaking in a statement issued in Abuja, National Publicity Secretary Justin Ijeh described the Obi Kwankwaso Movement launch as a coordinated platform bringing together supporters from the Obidient Movement, Kwankwasiyya, the New Nigeria People’s Party and the African Democratic Congress.

Ijeh said the initiative represents a united front aimed at addressing Nigeria’s economic hardship, insecurity challenges and rising cost of living, which he described as urgent national concerns.

He stated that the movement is designed to promote what he called systemic reform and national renewal, positioning itself as a broad coalition of political interests with grassroots reach.

According to him, the group has already set up operational structures across the country and will begin formal inauguration of state chapters in the coming weeks.

Ijeh further urged Nigerians to join the movement, describing it as an inclusive platform open to citizens seeking alternative political leadership and national transformation.

The development adds a new layer of political realignment within opposition ranks, as parties and blocs position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political observers note that the emergence of the group mirrors earlier youth-driven mobilisation structures that significantly influenced the 2023 elections.

The announcement also comes amid ongoing tensions within the African Democratic Congress, where several prominent figures are reportedly eyeing the party’s presidential ticket.

Meanwhile, the Labour Party has dismissed viral claims suggesting any official invitation for Obi or Kwankwaso to return to its fold, describing such messages as unauthorised and misleading.

The evolving political landscape underscores increasing competition among opposition blocs as preparations for the primaries gather momentum.
