Rivers Police arrest suspect Mr Goodnews for the alleged defilement of a 16-year-old girl in Rukpokwu. Investigation is ongoing as rights groups demand justice

Operatives of the Special Area Rumudomaya police division, attached to the Rivers State Police Command, arrested a man identified as Mr Goodnews on Monday, May 4, 2026, for the alleged defilement of a 16-year-old neighbour.

The incident reportedly took place at a residence along Apu Road in the Rukpokwu area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

Authorities took the suspect into custody following a formal complaint lodged by the victim’s family after the teenager reported the assault.

A family friend of the victims, Chidi Obulor, informed reporters in Port Harcourt that the suspect lured the girl into his apartment under the pretext of sending her on a domestic errand.

Once inside the premises, the suspect allegedly took advantage of the minor.

Following the report, the young woman was immediately transported to a local medical facility where she underwent a forensic examination and received necessary clinical treatment.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Blessing Agabe, acting as the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed that this Rivers Police arrest suspect operation was successful and that the individual remains in detention.

Blessing Agabe noted that a formal investigation has been launched to establish the full facts of the case.

Current procedural steps are being taken to transfer the file to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department in Port Harcourt for a more exhaustive inquiry.

The Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign has voiced significant concern regarding the case, specifically targeting local groups allegedly attempting to bypass the legal system.

National Coordinator Prince Wiro stated that certain individuals have attempted to initiate an informal settlement between the families involved.

Prince Wiro argued that such crimes are an affront to the state and that allowing perpetrators to evade the judiciary through private agreements only serves to embolden future offenders.

Advocacy groups continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure that the legal process remains transparent and that no outside interference compromises the pursuit of justice.

The police command has reiterated its commitment to a thorough investigation, asserting that the suspect will be arraigned in court if the evidence gathered during the probe confirms his culpability.
