Tottenham vs Leeds ends 1-1 as Spurs remain just above the relegation zone after a tense Premier League clash

Tottenham Hotspur missed a crucial opportunity to ease their Premier League survival fears after being held to a tense 1-1 draw by Leeds United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday night.

French forward Mathys Tel endured a dramatic evening as he scored Tottenham’s opener before conceding the penalty that handed Leeds a valuable point in the fiercely contested Tottenham vs Leeds encounter.

The result leaves Spurs just two points above 18th-placed West Ham United with only two matches remaining in the season.

Tottenham entered the match under pressure after West Ham narrowly lost 1-0 to Arsenal on Sunday following a late VAR intervention that ruled out a stoppage-time equaliser.

That result ensured that Nottingham Forest and Leeds secured Premier League safety, while Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley have already been relegated.

Despite dominating possession for long spells, Tottenham struggled to break down Daniel Farke’s resilient side during the first half.

Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky produced an excellent save in the 21st minute to keep out a close-range header from Joe Rodon.

At the other end, Joao Palhinha missed a clear opportunity after bursting into the penalty area, firing over the crossbar as Tottenham increased the pressure before the interval.

The breakthrough finally arrived five minutes into the second half when Mathys Tel reacted quickest after a corner from Pedro Porro dropped kindly inside the area.

The Frenchman calmly curled his effort beyond Karl Darlow to spark celebrations among the home supporters.

However, the momentum shifted dramatically midway through the second half when Mathys Tel attempted an acrobatic clearance inside his own penalty area and caught Ethan Ampadu with a high boot.

After a VAR review, referee Jarred Gillett awarded a penalty to Leeds.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin stepped forward and converted confidently to level the score.

Tottenham supporters were later lifted by the introduction of James Maddison, who made his first appearance of the season after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The home crowd grew louder when officials signalled 13 minutes of stoppage time, but Spurs were forced to survive late pressure from Leeds.

Antonin Kinsky produced a sensational save in the 98th minute to deny Sean Longstaff from point-blank range before the midfielder squandered another clear opportunity moments later.

The draw moves Tottenham onto 38 points, narrowly keeping them above West Ham on goal difference in the relegation battle.

Since replacing interim manager Igor Tudor at the end of March, Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi has been attempting to rescue the club from its first relegation since 1977.

The Italian manager inherited a team that had gone 13 league matches without a victory before gradually restoring belief with recent wins over Wolves and Aston Villa.

Tottenham now face difficult fixtures against Chelsea and Everton, while West Ham still have games against Newcastle United and Leeds as the dramatic relegation fight heads towards its conclusion.
