Nigeria prepares to finalise the Super Eagles AFCON squad as Eric Chelle assesses form, fitness and replacements ahead of Morocco 2025

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle is set to trim his 54-man provisional Super Eagles AFCON squad to a final list of 28 players as preparations intensify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the tournament begins on 21 December.

Chelle faces an immediate rebuilding challenge after rising star Benjamin Fredrick was ruled out through injury and captain William Troost-Ekong retired from international football shortly after the provisional squad was unveiled.

The disruption has forced a reassessment of key defensive and midfield positions as the team looks to maintain balance and experience.

CAF regulations permit squads of between 24 and 28 players, with four optional reserves.

The framework has heightened competition among newcomers, returning players and established internationals seeking to secure places in the final roster.

Chelle is expected to prioritise consistency, fitness and tactical discipline as he shapes his travelling party.

Full back Ola Aina remains central to those plans despite missing more than 100 days through a hamstring injury sustained in September.

The Nottingham Forest defender, capped 48 times, was included in the provisional squad in anticipation of a timely recovery.

His pace, defensive intelligence and ability to drive attacks from the flanks could prove invaluable, and the recent launch of his special AFCON boots underscores his determination to feature.

Paul Onuachu has surged back into contention following an impressive run at Trabzonspor, where he leads all Nigerian players in Europe’s top leagues with 11 domestic goals.

The striker’s aerial strength and hold-up play offer an effective alternative to Victor Osimhen’s mobility, making him a compelling option for Chelle’s forward line.

In midfield, Ebenezer Akinsanmiro has emerged as one of the new season’s revelations.

On loan at Pisa from Inter Milan, the 20-year-old has delivered energetic, composed displays and returned from injury this week with a confident showing against Parma.

Chelle has monitored him closely, valuing his quick transitions and creativity.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru of Lazio also strengthens the midfield pool.

Following recovery from a hamstring setback, he has returned with strong passing accuracy and reliable ball retention, attributes that could provide structural stability in tight contests.

Bayer Leverkusen winger Nathan Tella offers width and directness after recovering from a knee bruise. His ability to create chances and beat defenders gives Chelle additional attacking variety.

At right back, Ryan Alebiosu of Blackburn Rovers remains uncapped but has impressed with defensive resilience and consistent contributions in the final third.

Centre-back Igoh Ogbu has re-entered the frame after overcoming two hamstring injuries.

His aerial prowess, duel success rate and ball-playing confidence add welcome depth following the departures of Troost-Ekong and Fredrick.

Chelle is expected to name his final squad in the coming days as Nigeria intensifies preparations for what many analysts describe as a pivotal and potentially powerful AFCON campaign.
