Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration has launched an emergency probe after a second Ijebu Ode gas leakage affected over 100 students and teachers on Friday

The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has ordered an immediate multi-agency investigation following a fresh Ijebu Ode gas leakage that affected over 100 students and teachers.

This second environmental crisis occurred less than six weeks after a similar incident on 1 April 2026 led to the temporary closure of educational institutions in the same local government area.

The emission primarily impacted Our Lady of Apostle Secondary School at Epe Garage and Anglican Girls Grammar School in Obalende, forcing a chaotic evacuation as several individuals fainted.

Viral footage from the scene showed educators and emergency responders hoisting unconscious students into vehicles to be rushed to the Ogun State State Hospital and various private medical facilities within the town.

Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya confirmed the development in an official statement, noting that air quality sensors at Ijebu Ode Grammar School detected a disturbing surge in methane concentrations.

Technical readings reached peak levels of approximately 13,500 ppm, prompting the state to activate its environmental and public health assessment team to locate the exact source of the discharge.

The state government has deployed experts from the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency, OGEPA, alongside security agents to assess the spatial extent of the risk.

Investigations are currently focusing on identifying associated gases, including hydrogen sulphide and volatile organic compounds, that may be contributing to the respiratory distress reported by residents in the Makalewo and Molipa axes.

This latest Ijebu Ode gas leakage comes despite the previous establishment of a situation room at the State General Hospital intended to provide free treatment and surveillance.

Governor Abiodun has reiterated his commitment to public safety, directing that all affected individuals receive comprehensive medical care while experts work to prevent a third occurrence in the densely populated region.

Residents of the impacted communities, including those near Oke-Aje market and Igbegba, have been advised to avoid using open flames or potential ignition sources if they detect unusual odours.

Health officials have urged anyone experiencing dizziness, persistent headaches, or nausea to report to the nearest medical facility immediately as environmental monitoring continues.
