Tunji Disu appointment as Acting Inspector-General of Police by President Tinubu marks a new leadership era for the Nigeria Police Force

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday decorated Mr. Tunji Disu with the rank of Acting Inspector-General of Police at the State House, Abuja, formally ushering in a new leadership at the helm of the Nigeria Police Force.

The ceremony, held at approximately 3:00 p.m., followed Disu’s swearing-in and was attended by senior government and security officials, including the immediate past Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, who resigned citing pressing family considerations.

With his elevation, the 59-year-old Lagos-born officer becomes Nigeria’s 23rd Inspector-General of Police.

Disu previously served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, and held strategic positions including Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

He also led the Intelligence Response Team, overseeing several high-profile operations.

President Tinubu approved Disu’s appointment on Tuesday, and it takes immediate effect, pending Senate confirmation in line with the Police Act 2020.

The Nigeria Police Council is expected to consider his nomination for a substantive appointment.

Disu is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and brings decades of operational and administrative experience to his new role.

His appointment comes 48 days before mandatory retirement at age 60 or completion of 35 years of service, and within the framework of the 2024 Police Act amendment introducing a fixed four-year tenure for Inspectors-General of Police.

The decoration ceremony included senior security officials such as the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the Commander of the Brigade of Guards, and Disu’s parents, highlighting both professional and personal significance of the transition.
