Plateau VIO escape accident leaves pregnant woman dead in Jos after reckless driver fleeing officials crashes, police confirm arrest

A heavily pregnant woman identified as Ruth Nen Maurice has died in a fatal road crash in Jos, Plateau State, after a driver allegedly fleeing officials of the Vehicle Inspection Office, VIO, lost control and struck her along a busy city centre road.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, according to eyewitness accounts, during what is believed to have been a reckless attempt by the driver to evade a VIO checkpoint in the state capital.

The accident has since triggered widespread grief after it was revealed that the deceased was standing by the roadside waiting for transport to attend antenatal care when she was hit.

Friends of the victim described the tragedy as devastating, with Ewan Boss Julz Odumu confirming the incident in an emotional Facebook post on Wednesday.

Odumu stated that Ruth Nen Maurice was expecting twins and was close to her delivery date before the collision abruptly ended her life and that of her unborn children.

He described the incident as a painful loss, lamenting that a moment of alleged recklessness destroyed the lives of a mother and her unborn babies who never had the chance to survive.

Eyewitnesses claimed the driver was attempting dangerous manoeuvres while fleeing VIO operatives when the vehicle veered off course and struck the woman.

Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, DSP Alfred Alabo, who stated that the driver involved had been arrested.

According to the police, investigations have commenced and the suspect will be charged to court upon completion of inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Authorities have not yet released further details, while efforts to reach the Chief Vehicle Inspection Officer in the state, Jonathan Zam, for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

The tragic incident has intensified concerns over reckless driving and enforcement chases on Nigerian roads, particularly in urban centres where traffic and pedestrian activity are high.
