Man arrested in Ogun State over alleged fake bandits attack hoax staged for TikTok followers

A yet-to-be-identified young man has been arrested in Atan, a community in Ogun State, after allegedly staging a fake bandits attack scare in a bid to attract social media attention, according to a disturbing confession shared from a police station.

Security sources said the suspect was taken into custody after allegedly spreading panic within the community with claims of a violent attack that later turned out to be fabricated.

The case, now described by authorities as a potential fake bandits attack hoax, has sparked outrage among residents who say the incident caused unnecessary fear and tension in the area.

In a viral statement attributed to the suspect at a police station, he pleaded for forgiveness, admitting the alleged stunt was designed to boost his TikTok following.

“I raised a fake bandits attack just to gain TikTok followers, please forgive me. My Ileya customers’ clothes are still in my shop,” he was quoted as saying.

The incident reportedly unfolded in Atan, a semi-urban community in Ogun State where residents have previously raised concerns about misinformation spreading quickly through social media platforms.

Officials have not yet released full details of the arrest, but sources confirmed that the suspect is in custody and assisting with investigations.

The Nigeria Police Force is expected to provide further clarification as the case progresses, particularly on the circumstances that led to the staged alert and the potential legal consequences.

Authorities have repeatedly warned against spreading false security alerts, noting that such actions can trigger panic, disrupt public order, and divert security resources from genuine threats.

The suspect’s confession has since drawn mixed reactions online, with many condemning the act as reckless, while others point to the growing pressure for social media attention as a contributing factor.
