Kano tension rises over NDC governorship choice

Kano NDC governorship candidate speculation grows as Kwankwasiyya leaders reportedly settle for Aminu Gwarzo ahead of unveiling

Political tension intensified across Kano State on Thursday, May 28, 2026, as supporters and stakeholders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress awaited the official unveiling of the party’s governorship candidate by Kwankwasiyya Movement leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The anticipated announcement follows several days of high-level consultations and closed-door meetings within the Kwankwasiyya political structure, with multiple party insiders indicating that former Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo has emerged as the preferred consensus nominee.

Sources familiar with the negotiations said the Kano NDC governorship candidate decision was finalised after extensive deliberations involving loyalists, political strategists and influential stakeholders across the movement.

Aminu Gwarzo resigned as deputy governor in March amid a political crisis that followed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The political realignment in Kano has since triggered intense calculations ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with various factions seeking to consolidate influence within the opposition bloc.

Insiders disclosed that the Kwankwasiyya leadership also reviewed the candidature of former APC governorship flag bearer, Nasiru Gawuna, before eventually settling for Gwarzo as the consensus option.

“The discussions were intense and far-reaching, but at the end of the day, the movement agreed on Gwarzo as the consensus candidate,” one source familiar with the process said.

The development has heightened anticipation within the Kano political landscape, particularly as efforts were reportedly made to accommodate Gawuna through alternative political offers, including the deputy governorship slot or a senatorial ticket for Kano Central.

However, sources said Gawuna declined the proposals, maintaining that his loyalty to the Kwankwasiyya movement was unconditional and not dependent on securing a political position.

The Kano NDC governorship candidate process has also reignited debate over zoning and electoral strategy within the opposition movement.

Some political stakeholders argued that presenting a candidate from Kano Central would provide a stronger electoral advantage against Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who is serving his first term and also hails from the same zone.

Supporters of Gwarzo, however, insisted that his longstanding loyalty, political sacrifices and alignment with Kwankwasiyya ideology made him the strongest choice for the governorship contest.

Political consultations and lobbying reportedly intensified across Kano on Thursday as party supporters awaited official confirmation from the movement’s leadership.

A party insider described the atmosphere as “charged yet hopeful,” warning that the final decision could either strengthen party cohesion or trigger fresh political realignments within the state.

In a separate reaction, political commentator Ahmed Gogel defended Nasiru Gawuna’s political relevance, arguing that overlooking his electoral strength could weaken the opposition’s chances.

“Politics is about numbers and acceptability. Gawuna remains one of the most formidable candidates in Kano,” Gogel said.

As of press time, the Nigeria Democratic Congress had yet to issue an official statement confirming its governorship candidate for the state.
