FRSC arrests suspected one chance gang in Ibadan after recovering a stolen mobile phone and handing suspects to police for investigation

The Federal Road Safety Corps has arrested suspected members of a phone theft and “one chance” robbery syndicate and recovered a stolen mobile phone during a routine patrol operation in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, and published on the agency’s official Facebook page.

According to the statement, the suspects were intercepted by an FRSC patrol team conducting routine operations along the Babalegba–Eleyele–Ojoo corridor in the early hours of Monday.

The operation began when officers observed a motorcycle rider pursuing a Nissan Micra with registration number AJW 903XE. Moments later, a female passenger reportedly raised an alarm, alleging that her mobile phone had been stolen while inside the vehicle.

“Acting swiftly, the patrol team stopped the vehicle and commenced preliminary interrogation,” the statement said.

The driver, identified as Idowu Mukaila, allegedly told officers that he could facilitate the recovery of the missing device.

The situation took a dramatic turn shortly afterwards when another individual reportedly arrived at the scene and produced the stolen phone, prompting further suspicion among the operatives.

“Shortly thereafter, another individual arrived and produced the stolen device, raising further suspicion of an organised criminal operation,” the Corps stated.

Following the recovery, the suspects were taken into custody and the matter was reported to the appropriate authorities for further investigation.

The FRSC said officials of the Park Management System and the Oyo State Drivers’ Union later informed the agency that both the driver and the vehicle had already been under surveillance over alleged involvement in phone theft and “one chance” robbery activities within Ibadan.

The FRSC Arrests Suspected One Chance Gang operation was subsequently escalated to the police.

“Following interrogation by the Sector Commander and Deputy Corps Commander Operations, the case was handed over to the Nigeria Police Force, Eleyele Division, for comprehensive investigation and possible prosecution,” the statement added.

The Corps described the arrest as evidence of the importance of vigilance among patrol officers and effective collaboration between security agencies in combating crime.

It further urged members of the public to remain alert and promptly report suspicious activities to relevant authorities.

The incident highlights the growing role of FRSC operatives beyond road safety enforcement, particularly in supporting law enforcement efforts aimed at tackling criminal activities along major transport routes.
