Okonkwo refuses to retract damaging claims against Obi in NDC row

Kenneth Okonkwo has firmly refused to retract his allegations against Peter Obi over the NDC ticket controversy, escalating tensions between the former allies amid claims of irregularities in the party primaries

Kenneth Okonkwo, a prominent chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, and party stakeholders confronted a deepening political rift in Abuja on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, as Okonkwo rejected demands for a retraction and public apology over his explosive claims concerning the NDC primaries.

Okonkwo made the comments during a recent interview on Channels Television, where he alleged irregularities including demands for substantial payments from aspirants seeking party tickets in the South-East.

He insisted the statements were based on complaints from affected aspirants and credible sources, refusing to withdraw them despite a pre-action notice from Obi.

Peter Obi, through his legal team, had issued a strong demand for retraction, a public apology, and damages, describing the remarks as false, malicious, and damaging to his reputation.

The former Anambra governor maintains his innocence and has signalled readiness to pursue legal redress if necessary.

This latest exchange highlights ongoing strains within Nigeria’s opposition landscape following the NDC primaries earlier in 2026, which saw Obi emerge as the party’s presidential flagbearer.

Allegations of financial impropriety and favouritism during candidate selection have surfaced, though some aspirants have since distanced themselves from specific claims.

Okonkwo, a former ally of Obi from Labour Party days, has positioned himself as a vocal critic, arguing that such practices undermine democratic principles within the party.

His refusal to back down underscores the intensity of personal and political divisions as Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections.

Observers note that while robust debate strengthens democracy, unsubstantiated accusations risk eroding public trust in opposition figures and parties alike. Both sides have called for transparency and adherence to the rule of law in resolving the matter.
