A three-storey building collapsed in the Alakija area of Lagos State on Thursday, June 25, 2026, sparking fears that several people may be trapped beneath the rubble as residents awaited the arrival of emergency responders.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 11:40 a.m., sending shockwaves through the busy neighbourhood and drawing large crowds of anxious residents and bystanders to the scene.

Initial reports indicated that the exact number of people trapped could not be immediately confirmed.

Witnesses said efforts were underway to assess the extent of the damage while concerned residents searched for information about those who may have been inside the structure when it gave way.

The Lagos Building Collapse quickly became a source of concern across the community as rescue operations had yet to commence at the time the incident was first reported.

Images and videos circulating from the scene showed the collapsed structure reduced to piles of concrete and debris, with residents gathering around the site in anticipation of emergency intervention.

Authorities had not released details regarding possible casualties or injuries, while the cause of the collapse also remained unknown.

Building collapses have remained a recurring challenge in parts of Lagos over the years, often prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement of construction standards and regular structural inspections.

Several previous incidents have resulted in fatalities, injuries and significant property losses.

As rescue efforts prepare to get underway, families and residents remain hopeful that anyone trapped beneath the rubble can be reached quickly.

The coming hours are expected to be crucial as emergency agencies work to account for those feared missing.

Officials are expected to provide further updates once rescue teams complete preliminary assessments of the site and establish the number of people affected by the disaster.
