Former Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Soyemi Coker, has died after reportedly collapsing on Sunday morning in Lagos while preparing to attend church.

Coker, a prominent figure in Ogun State politics and a respected leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Odeda Local Government Area, was said to have passed away shortly before leaving for the church service.

His family confirmed the death, describing it as a painful loss while expressing gratitude to God for his life and submitting to what they called the will of God.

Funeral arrangements, according to the family, will be announced in due course.

The late lawmaker served as Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly in 2010, a position in which he played a key role in legislative affairs during a significant period in the state’s political history.

Before his elevation to the speakership, Coker served as Chairman of Odeda Local Government, where he earned recognition for his commitment to grassroots governance and community development.

Throughout his political career, he was widely regarded as a calm and approachable leader whose style of leadership attracted respect from political associates and opponents alike.

His contributions to legislative development and local government administration helped shape governance in Ogun State, particularly within Odeda and neighbouring communities.

In a brief tribute, members of his family described him as a devoted public servant whose legacy would continue to inspire future generations of leaders.

“His passing is a painful loss to the family, but we are grateful to God for a life well lived and submit to His divine will,” the family said.

Coker’s death has drawn sympathy from political associates, supporters and community leaders, many of whom remembered him as a man of integrity who remained closely connected to the people throughout his years in public office.

His passing comes at a time when Ogun State continues to witness tributes to veteran political figures whose contributions have shaped the state’s democratic institutions over the years.
