A major disaster was averted in Lagos State on Thursday, 23 July 2026, after a gas-loaded tanker caught fire along Abaranje Road in the Ikotun area, with emergency responders quickly containing the blaze and recording no casualties.

The incident occurred at Ola Farm Bus Stop, where the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) led a coordinated response to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes, businesses and road users.

The Gas Tanker Fire in Lagos was brought under control after LASEMA officials arrived at the scene and worked alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to extinguish the flames and secure the area.

LASEMA spokesperson Olawale Afolabi said preliminary findings indicated that the tanker was travelling at high speed when it struck a road bump, causing the driver to lose control.

“Initial findings indicate that the vehicle was travelling at speed when it struck a road bump. The impact caused the driver to lose control, which led to a tyre burst and an immediate fire outbreak,” Afolabi said.

According to the agency, the tanker was already engulfed in flames when emergency teams arrived. Despite the intensity of the fire, no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded.

Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police Force, Ikotun Division, assisted with traffic management and crowd control during the emergency operation.

“We are grateful to report that there was no loss of life, and no casualties were recorded. The situation has been brought under control, and the fire fully extinguished,” Afolabi said.

LASEMA said efforts were continuing to remove the damaged tanker from the roadway using heavy-duty equipment to restore normal traffic movement along the route.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly around speed bumps and residential areas where accidents involving heavy vehicles can have severe consequences.

“We use this opportunity to remind all motorists of the importance of adhering to speed limits, particularly around designated bumps and in residential corridors. Such caution saves lives and protects property,” he said.

Oke-Osanyintolu reaffirmed LASEMA’s commitment to emergency preparedness and rapid response across Lagos, while encouraging residents to report emergencies through the state’s toll-free lines 112 and 767.

The incident comes days after another fire outbreak in Lagos, where an electrical surge from a prepaid meter damaged the top floor of a three-storey residential building in the Ketu-Ikosi area, highlighting ongoing concerns around fire prevention and emergency readiness in the state.
