The lone occupant of a Toyota Sienna died instantly after losing control and crashing into a roadside building along the Mongoro to Ile-Zik corridor

A female motorist died instantly in a fatal Lagos crash on Sunday after her Toyota Sienna veered off the road and rammed into a roadside building at Mongoro, inward Ile-Zik, along one of Lagos State’s busiest highways.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq.

According to LASTMA, preliminary findings showed that the woman was the sole occupant of the Toyota Sienna, with registration number LND 162 HB, when she reportedly lost control of the vehicle.

The vehicle subsequently left the carriageway and crashed into the building, with the force of the collision proving fatal.

LASTMA said its officers, who were on routine patrol in the area, responded promptly after the crash. The officials cordoned off the affected section with safety cones and directed traffic to prevent congestion and reduce the risk of further accidents during the evacuation.

Although the incident temporarily disrupted traffic flow along the busy corridor, LASTMA said normal vehicular movement was restored shortly after the emergency response.

Security operatives from the Afonka Police Post, under the Shasha Divisional Police Headquarters, also provided security throughout the evacuation operation.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as a tragic reminder of the potentially devastating consequences of excessive speeding and reckless driving.

“Every journey must be undertaken with prudence, patience and an unwavering commitment to established traffic regulations. No destination is worth the ultimate sacrifice of human life,” Bakare-Oki said.

He warned that excessive speed remains a major factor in fatal road traffic crashes and urged motorists to exercise greater restraint and caution whenever they are behind the wheel.

“Excessive speed remains one of the foremost causes of fatal road traffic crashes and motorists must, at all times, exercise the highest degree of caution, restraint and responsibility while behind the wheel,” he added.

Bakare-Oki also advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before setting out, stressing that suspected mechanical faults should be addressed promptly rather than ignored.

The latest Lagos crash has once again drawn attention to the dangers faced by motorists on the state’s heavily travelled roads, where speeding, poor vehicle maintenance and other unsafe driving practices can have devastating consequences.

While the precise circumstances that caused the driver to lose control remain subject to further investigation, LASTMA’s warning highlights the importance of defensive driving and adherence to speed limits in reducing the risk of fatal collisions.

The traffic management authority expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed for the strength to cope with the loss.
