Hackers allegedly accessed customer information in a cyber incident, prompting Zenith Bank to reassure customers while cybersecurity experts renewed calls for stronger digital safeguards

Zenith Bank Plc, one of Nigeria’s largest financial institutions, is facing renewed scrutiny after reports emerged that hackers allegedly gained unauthorised access to customer information, raising fresh concerns over cybersecurity across the country’s banking sector.

The incident, reported by multiple media outlets on Monday, has reignited conversations about the resilience of digital banking infrastructure as financial institutions continue to battle increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. ([TheCable][1])

The Zenith Bank Cyberattack reportedly involved unauthorised access to certain customer information. Although reports indicate that sensitive customer data may have been exposed, there has been no confirmed evidence that customers’ funds were directly compromised during the incident.

Reacting to the development, Zenith Bank reassured customers that it had activated appropriate security protocols and was working to assess the scope of the incident. The bank said investigations were ongoing while additional protective measures had been deployed to safeguard its systems and customers’ accounts.

Cybersecurity specialists say attacks targeting financial institutions have become increasingly complex, with criminal networks exploiting stolen credentials, phishing campaigns and system vulnerabilities rather than attempting direct attacks on core banking platforms.

The trend has forced banks to invest heavily in digital resilience and continuous monitoring of their networks.

“The safety and security of customer information remain our highest priority,” the bank said in its response as it assured customers that efforts were underway to contain the incident and strengthen existing protections.

Industry analysts described the latest development as another powerful reminder that cybersecurity has become a boardroom priority rather than merely an information technology issue.

They noted that banks now face relentless attacks from increasingly organised cybercriminal groups seeking valuable financial and personal data.

The incident comes against the backdrop of a broader rise in electronic fraud and cybercrime affecting Nigeria’s financial sector.

In recent months, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Nigeria Police Force have investigated several major cybercrime cases involving billions of naira allegedly diverted through compromised digital systems.

Separately, the Central Bank of Nigeria has repeatedly warned Nigerians about phishing campaigns and fraudulent messages designed to steal personal and banking information.

Zenith Bank has consistently invested in strengthening its cybersecurity framework.

According to the bank’s 2025 Annual Report, it recorded no confirmed customer data breaches during the reporting period, renewed key international information security certifications and trained more than 10,000 employees on cybersecurity awareness as part of its digital risk management programme.

While investigations into the reported Zenith Bank Cyberattack continue, cybersecurity professionals have advised customers of all financial institutions to remain vigilant by using strong passwords, enabling multi factor authentication where available, avoiding suspicious links and promptly reporting unusual account activity.
