A confrontation briefly disrupted voting at the Accord deputy governorship candidate’s polling unit in Ile-Ife

Tension briefly flared at the polling unit of Osun State Deputy Governor and Accord Party deputy governorship candidate, Prince Kola Adewusi, on Saturday after All Progressives Congress deputy governorship candidate Benjamin Kayode Adereti arrived at the voting centre during the ongoing governorship election.

Adereti had earlier cast his ballot at his designated Waasin Polling Unit 11, Ilaare Ward 3, before proceeding to Adewusi’s polling unit in Ile-Ife.

His arrival reportedly met resistance from some supporters of the serving deputy governor, triggering a heated confrontation.

The resulting Osun poll tension briefly disrupted the otherwise calm atmosphere around the polling location as supporters exchanged words and tempers rose.

Reports did not immediately establish why Adereti visited the polling unit or what specifically triggered the confrontation.

The precise circumstances surrounding the exchange also remained unclear at the time of reporting.

The situation was subsequently brought under control, with reports indicating that voting continued at the location. No injuries or arrests were reported at the polling unit in the accounts available at the time.

Adereti is the running mate to APC governorship candidate Bola Oyebamiji, while Adewusi is the running mate to incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is seeking another term on the Accord platform.

The confrontation came against a politically charged backdrop in Osun, where voters were choosing a governor in a contest involving several major political parties and candidates.

Despite the incident, reports from other parts of the state indicated that voting was proceeding peacefully in several locations, although isolated security concerns had also been reported.

ThisDay, for instance, reported an alleged attack at the polling unit of ADC governorship candidate Najeem Salaam in Ejigbo.

Adewusi had earlier expressed confidence in an Accord victory while participating in the election process.

The brief confrontation at his polling unit therefore added a tense moment to an election already attracting considerable attention over security, voter participation and the conduct of political actors.

With voting continuing across Osun State, security personnel and election officials face the task of ensuring that isolated confrontations do not escalate and that voters can complete the process without intimidation.
