The German mission says applicants should rely on official channels, stressing that visa appointments are free and it does not work with fee-charging third parties.

German Embassy warns Nigerians over visa agents

thenacre-campaign

The German Embassy in Nigeria warned Nigerians on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, against relying on so-called visa agents for information or assistance with German visa applications, urging applicants to obtain accurate guidance directly from the German mission’s official channels.

The warning came in a post on the embassy’s official X account amid concerns about misinformation surrounding visa procedures, appointments and application requirements.

“Beware of misinformation. Save yourself the hassle & just ask us directly,” the mission said.

The embassy also invited Nigerians to share claims they had heard from visa agents so that the mission could address some of them in subsequent posts.

“Tell us some of the things you’ve heard from ‘visa agents’ in the comments, and we’ll answer in upcoming posts,” it added.

The German mission was particularly direct about its relationship with commercial intermediaries.

“We do not work with any ‘visa Agents’!” the embassy stated.

The clarification is consistent with information published on the official website of the German missions in Nigeria.

The German Consulate General in Lagos says it does not cooperate with agencies or third parties offering appointment bookings for a fee.

The consulate also states that booking a visa appointment is free of charge and that appointments can only be booked through the official online system rather than by telephone or email.

Applicants are warned that using third parties can carry risks, including misuse of personal information. The consulate says applicants are responsible for misuse in their names and that misuse of the booking system can result in an applicant being blocked from making further bookings.

What applicants should know

The official German visa portal for Nigeria provides information on different categories of visas, including short-stay Schengen visas and national visas for stays exceeding 90 days.

Nigerian citizens require a visa to travel to Germany, with the appropriate category depending on the purpose and length of the proposed stay.

The German mission provides a visa navigator to help applicants determine which category applies to them.

For most applicants in Nigeria, the German Consulate General in Lagos is responsible for visa applications.

There are specific exceptions for certain applicants resident in the Federal Capital Territory and a number of northern states, depending on the type of visa and their circumstances.

For short-stay Schengen applications, the consulate says applicants must appear personally for their visa interview, submit the required documents and provide fingerprints.

It currently lists the visa processing fee at €90, payable in Nigerian naira at the applicable exchange rate.

For long-term visas, including applications for employment, study, vocational training, family reunification and certain other categories, applicants can use the Federal Foreign Office’s Consular Services Portal where the relevant online application route is available.

The mission also warns applicants against submitting forged documents or false information.

Such applications can be rejected and may have serious consequences for future travel to the Schengen area.

The warning comes as demand for German visa appointments remains high.

The German Consulate General says applicants should book as soon as their travel date becomes foreseeable because of longer waiting times. For certain categories, a waiting list is used, with appointments processed in chronological order.

The consulate has also introduced changes to some long-term visa procedures.

Since 1 July 2026, the Consulate General in Lagos has used the Foreign Portal for family reunification applications, while applicants who were already registered on the waiting list with a registration number do not need to create a new account.

These procedures make it particularly important for applicants to distinguish between legitimate assistance and claims made by individuals or businesses presenting themselves as having special access to the German visa system.

The embassy’s latest intervention does not mean applicants cannot seek general help with preparing documents or understanding immigration requirements.

Rather, its position is that such intermediaries should not be mistaken for official partners of the German mission, particularly where they claim to control appointments or have privileged access to the visa process.

For Nigerians planning to travel, study, work or reunite with family in Germany, the safest route remains the official German missions’ information and application channels.
