Wanted ex-gov Sylva summoned over $14.86m fraud

Former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva faces intense scrutiny as the anti-graft agency demands answers regarding a staggering financial scandal following his dramatic resignation from the ruling party.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission officially requested that former Bayelsa State Governor and former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, make himself available for questioning regarding an alleged $14.86m fraud.

The federal anti-graft agency issued this directive shortly after the seasoned politician announced his resignation from the ruling All Progressives Congress, setting the stage for a high-profile legal and political confrontation.

The tension escalated when Dele Oyewale, the official spokesman for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, addressed accusations levelled by the former minister.

The ex-governor had previously claimed that the commission was operating primarily as an extension of the ruling political party rather than an independent state institution.

“He has been declared wanted; he should make himself available to the commission,” Mr Oyewale stated firmly when asked to address the partisan allegations.

The former governor officially departed from his party on Monday, the thirty-first of August 2026, transmitting a detailed resignation letter electronically to the party chairman of Ward 4 in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The correspondence, which was copied to the national party leadership and the executive chairman of the anti-graft commission, painted a picture of a politician deeply dissatisfied with the current administration.

Mr Sylva accused the current government leadership of abandoning the foundational ideals of their political organisation. He noted that the administration of President Bola Tinubu had failed to meet the expectations of the populace.

“I am deliberately putting the EFCC in copy of this letter because, of late, it has conducted itself more as an organ of the APC than as an institution of State,” the former minister wrote.

He further acknowledged the immense risks associated with his departure, adding that he was fully aware his actions might invite a redoubled witch-hunt against him and his associates.

The background of this unprecedented fallout reveals a complex web of financial allegations and political intrigue.

The commission originally declared the Bayelsa politician wanted in November 2025 concerning a conspiracy and the dishonest conversion of exactly $14,859,257.

Beyond the immediate financial misconduct allegations, the former minister is simultaneously listed as a defendant still at large in a thirteen-count federal charge.

These grave charges include suspected treason, terrorism-related offences, and money laundering tied to an alleged plot against the current federal administration.

Security investigators reportedly identified him as a principal financier of the operation, tracing approximately N785m of a pooled N5bn through a corporate entity known as Purple Waves Limited.

Mr Sylva has vehemently denied any involvement in the purported plot, maintaining his innocence while the matters remain subject to active judicial proceedings.

He currently resides outside the country after departing following initial public revelations of the security investigations.

To balance the narrative, it is vital to recognise the politician’s significant historical footprint.

He governed Bayelsa State from 2007 to 2012 before eventually serving as a federal minister under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

However, his recent legal battles have resulted in severe consequences, including an interim forfeiture order granted by the Federal High Court in May 2026 covering nine of his properties.

As the nation watches this unfolding drama, the demands for accountability continue to mount, underscoring the delicate balance between political freedom and the rigorous enforcement of financial integrity.
