Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has celebrated a historic political milestone after her government became the longest-serving administration in the history of the Italian Republic.

Meloni’s government reached 1,413 days in office on Friday, surpassing the previous record of 1,412 days held by Silvio Berlusconi’s second government, which served from 2001 to 2005.

In a statement posted on X, Meloni described the achievement as a moment of gratitude and responsibility, arguing that political stability provides the foundation for effective national planning and governance.

“Today our Government becomes the longest-serving in the history of the Italian Republic,” Meloni wrote.

She said the milestone was not merely a record to celebrate but evidence of stability that allowed governments to plan, make decisions, honour commitments and strengthen the country’s standing.

“It is a fact that I welcome with gratitude and a strong sense of responsibility. Because stability is not a record to flaunt, but the condition that allows a Nation to plan, decide, honour commitments, and command respect,” she added.

Meloni also highlighted what she described as key achievements of her administration, including increased employment, lower unemployment, support for families and businesses, stronger security and improved Italy’s position internationally.

“In these years we have worked to increase employment, reduce unemployment, support families and businesses, strengthen security, manage public finances with seriousness, and restore to Italy weight and credibility on the international stage,” she said.

While celebrating the progress, the Italian leader acknowledged that significant challenges remained.

“The results are there, but we know full well how many things still remain to be done,” she said.

Meloni attributed the longevity of her government to the unity of her centre-right coalition rather than the efforts of one individual.

“This stability is not the merit of a single person. It is the result of a united coalition, which has governed for four years with a shared vision and which has chosen to stay together not against someone, but to realise a project for Italy,” she said.

She further pointed to the historical performance of centre-right governments, noting that the three longest-serving administrations in the history of the Italian Republic have all come from the political bloc.

“I do not believe it is a coincidence that, from today, the three longest-serving Governments in republican history are all centre-right governments,” Meloni said.

According to her, lasting political stability depends on alliances sharing common values, objectives and a national vision rather than simply uniting to prevent opponents from taking power.

The Prime Minister also credited Italian voters who backed her coalition in the 2022 general election for giving her government the opportunity to remain in office.

“But above all, this stability exists thanks to the Italians who in 2022 gave us their trust,” she said.

Meloni said her government had never regarded that support as a “blank check” and would return to voters next year with an account of its achievements, outstanding tasks and vision for Italy’s future.

“It will once again be up to them to decide whether we deserve to continue this journey,” she added.

Meloni later planned to meet supporters of her Fratelli d’Italia party in Bari, where she said she would reflect on the government’s record and discuss its future plans.

“In the meantime, the work goes on,” she said.

She added that the meeting would provide an opportunity to assess the journey so far and discuss the road ahead.

“Forward, with our feet on the ground and our gaze turned to the future,” Meloni said.

British Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch also congratulated Meloni, describing her achievement as an inspiration.

Badenoch highlighted the Italian leader’s political resilience, particularly after critics had underestimated her when she first emerged as a major political figure.

“Giorgia Meloni now leads Italy’s longest-serving government since the Second World War,” Badenoch wrote.

“A remarkable achievement for a woman written off by many when she came on the scene.

“She’s shown what conviction, clarity & the courage to stand your ground can achieve. A real inspiration!”

Meloni’s milestone marks a rare period of continuity in Italian politics, a country historically known for frequent changes of government, and places her administration firmly in the record books of the republic.
