South Korea interim head coach Robert Moreno, the 48-year-old former Spain manager, has firmly addressed controversy as Robert Moreno Denies claims that he used ChatGPT to prepare for matches, while outlining plans to rebuild confidence following a turbulent World Cup campaign.
Speaking at a Korea Football Association press conference, Robert Moreno set a measured tone ahead of a series of international friendlies, emphasising a commitment to restoring belief among supporters after the team’s group-stage exit in North America earlier this year.

“We’re going to try to do our work honestly and with the aim of making all Korean football fans happy,” Robert Moreno said. “Good matches, and trying to help the players.”
The Spaniard, who becomes the first from his country to lead the national side, has been appointed on an interim basis for upcoming fixtures against Ecuador and Uruguay in September, followed by Venezuela and Uzbekistan in October.
The Korea Football Association indicated that a longer tenure through the Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia early next year remains possible, subject to evaluation.
The appointment comes amid a period of intense scrutiny for South Korean football.
Former head coach Hong Myung-bo stepped down after a shock World Cup exit, a result that sparked widespread criticism and deepened concerns about leadership decisions within the federation.
Those concerns were compounded by a police raid on KFA headquarters linked to an investigation into Hong Myung-bo’s 2024 appointment.
The governing body has also issued an apology over separate allegations involving inappropriate hospitality for foreign referees, further eroding public trust.
Against this backdrop, Robert Moreno Denies resurfaced reports from his tenure at Russian club Sochi, where he departed in September 2025 after a difficult run of results.
Claims that Robert Moreno relied heavily on artificial intelligence tools, including ChatGPT, for tactical decisions and player recruitment had circulated widely online.
“That is a piece of news that is completely false and went viral,” Robert Moreno said. “Obviously I use technology. Anyone who spends 10 minutes looking into it can see that everything has been taken out of context and put together to cause harm.”
In a move likely to reassure fans, Robert Moreno named captain Son Heung-min in his squad for the upcoming matches.
The forward, now playing for Los Angeles FC in Major League Soccer, remains a central figure in the national team setup. Atletico Madrid midfielder Lee Kang-in and Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae were also included.
Robert Moreno addressed Son Heung-min’s role directly, following criticism of his limited use during the decisive World Cup match against South Africa under the previous regime.
“We’re all aware of Son’s versatility,” Robert Moreno said. “For me he can play in three positions.”
The coming friendlies offer South Korea an opportunity to reset both tactically and emotionally.
