Nigeria Boxing Federation Professional arm Chairman Azania Omo-Agege, alongside officials of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, announced the launch of a 30-day free legal service scheme designed to support professional boxers facing contractual challenges.
The initiative, introduced under NBF-Pro in partnership with Emoni Sports Law, is aimed at addressing long-standing concerns around exploitative and overlapping contracts involving Nigerian pugilists and international promoters.

The NBF free legal service boxers programme is expected to provide immediate relief while strengthening regulatory compliance across the sport.
According to the federation, the scheme will grant boxers access to contract audits, legal advice, and compliance checks at no cost within the 30-day window.
Legal experts will review agreements to identify illegal clauses, conflicts, and multiple signings that may have hindered fighters’ careers both locally and abroad.
Azania Omo-Agege described the move as a transformative step in ongoing reforms within Nigerian boxing.
“Firstly, I must appreciate the leadership of the Nigeria Boxing Federation for the ongoing reforms, which have truly impacted the sport in the country,” Azania Omo-Agege said.
“The legal framework designed to support our boxers will bring an end to all kinds of contract issues that may have inhibited the career trajectory of the athletes.”
Beyond dispute resolution, the programme includes an educational component aimed at equipping boxers with the knowledge to identify unfavourable deals before signing.
This preventive approach reflects a broader effort to promote transparency and professionalism within the sport.
Secondary elements of the scheme include guidance on terminating or harmonising multiple contracts and ensuring that future agreements align with the standards of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, the National Sports Commission, and World Boxing.
These measures are intended to create a more structured and credible environment for athletes navigating both domestic and international opportunities.
The NBF free legal service boxers initiative builds on recent reforms by the federation to reposition Nigerian boxing, including improved governance frameworks and increased engagement with global boxing bodies.
Historically, many African fighters have faced contractual disputes due to limited access to legal expertise, often resulting in stalled careers or financial setbacks.
Stakeholders believe the introduction of accessible legal support could prove a powerful turning point.
By addressing systemic issues at their root, the federation aims to protect athletes while enhancing Nigeria’s reputation within the global boxing community.

Boxers interested in the scheme have been advised to submit copies of all current contracts through official NBF-Pro channels within the 30-day period to benefit from the free service.
