Zuckerberg faces sharp loss as Meta shares fall on AI worry

Mark Zuckerberg, Chief Executive Officer of Meta Platforms, on Monday, September 29, 2026, in Menlo Park, California, United States, recorded a sharp personal wealth decline of about $12.2 billion as Meta’s share price fell amid rising investor concern over the company’s aggressive artificial intelligence expansion.

The drop in fortune came as markets reacted to renewed questions about the scale and timing of returns from Meta Platforms’ heavy investment cycle in AI infrastructure, data centres and advanced model development.

The movement also pushed broader tech sentiment into a cautious phase as investors reassessed the cost of scaling artificial intelligence across major US technology firms.

Meta shares fell by more than four percent during intraday trading, extending recent pressure that has been building across the technology sector.

The decline reflected growing unease over whether massive capital expenditure plans can translate into sustainable earnings in the near term.

The Meta shares fall on AI worry was further amplified by research commentary from major investment banks, including Goldman Sachs, which highlighted the possibility that hyperscale technology companies may need significantly higher AI-related revenues to justify their spending trajectories.

According to the analysis, the scale of investment across firms such as Meta, Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon could require unprecedented levels of monetisation from AI services to achieve meaningful profit margins. This has triggered renewed caution among institutional investors, particularly those focused on long-term tech valuation cycles.

A Meta spokesperson, reflecting the company’s long-term stance, has consistently maintained that artificial intelligence remains central to its future growth strategy.

Mark Zuckerberg has also previously emphasised the transformative potential of AI, stating in a recent company address that, “We are investing aggressively in AI because we believe it is core to the future of computing and will unlock new categories of productivity and innovation.”

However, market analysts remain divided on the timing of returns. One Goldman Sachs-linked research commentary noted that, “The scale of AI capital expenditure raises serious questions about near-term profitability, even if long-term value creation remains strong,” underscoring the tension between innovation and immediate financial performance.

Despite the latest decline, Meta’s broader financial position remains significantly stronger compared to earlier in the year, supported by sustained advertising revenue and continued user growth across its family of apps, including Facebook and Instagram.

The company’s long-term investor confidence has also been shaped by previous periods of strong share performance linked to product expansion and cost restructuring.

Zuckerberg’s fortune, which is heavily tied to Meta stock performance, has historically fluctuated with market sentiment toward the company’s strategic direction.

In earlier rallies, Meta’s gains added tens of billions of dollars to his net worth, underscoring the close relationship between corporate valuation and personal wealth at the highest levels of global tech leadership.

Market observers say the current pullback reflects not only company-specific concerns but also a broader reassessment of artificial intelligence investment cycles across Silicon Valley, where expectations for rapid monetisation are increasingly being weighed against the reality of high infrastructure costs.

While investor caution has intensified, Meta continues to position AI as a central pillar of its long-term roadmap, signalling that spending in the sector is likely to remain elevated in the coming quarters despite short-term market volatility.
