Flood hits Kwara communities, destroys houses, farmlands

AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Governor of Kwara State, has visited residents affected by flooding in Pututa and neighbouring communities in Edu Local Government Area, after floodwaters destroyed houses and farmlands across the area.

The affected communities include Tswako, Likpata, Godangi and Ekko, according to the Kwara State Government.

AbdulRazaq visited the communities to sympathise with residents and assess the immediate impact of the flooding.

The governor confirmed that no lives had been lost, although homes, farms and other property were damaged.

“No life was lost, but properties were destroyed,” AbdulRazaq said during the visit.

The flooding has disrupted livelihoods in communities where farming is an important source of income, with affected farmlands adding to the immediate pressure on residents recovering from the damage.

As an emergency response, AbdulRazaq announced ₦10 million in support for residents of Pututa.

The funds are intended to provide essential supplies, including food, drinking water and medicines, as affected households begin dealing with the consequences of the flooding.

The governor also directed the Kwara State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, to conduct a detailed assessment of the affected areas and determine the extent of the damage.

The assessment is expected to provide a clearer picture of the number of households affected and the scale of damage to homes, farms and other property.

The flooding comes against the backdrop of a wider federal warning issued as Nigeria enters another period of heightened flood risk.

On September 28, the Federal Government warned residents in 24 states, including Kwara, about possible flooding between September 27 and October 10, 2026.

The warning was linked to forecasts of heavy rainfall, rising river levels, saturated soil and increased surface runoff.

Communities across the 24 states were classified into critical, high and moderate risk categories under the federal advisory.

Kwara was among the states with communities placed in the critical-risk category, alongside Benue, Kogi, Niger, Adamawa, Bauchi, Taraba, Rivers, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo.

The latest flooding in Edu therefore highlights the continuing vulnerability of communities along the River Niger corridor, where heavy rainfall and rising water levels can compound existing drainage and river-management challenges.

The Kwara Government said it would continue discussions with the Federal Government over the dredging of the River Niger, which officials regard as part of the longer-term response required to reduce recurring flood risks in affected communities.

“The government will continue to engage with the Federal Government on the dredging of the River Niger to find a lasting solution to the flooding,” the state government said.

The call for a longer-term intervention comes as residents face the more immediate task of recovering homes, farmland and essential belongings damaged by the latest flooding.

For now, the state government’s emergency assistance is focused on food, clean drinking water and medicines, while SEMA’s assessment is expected to establish the broader humanitarian and material needs.

The absence of reported deaths has provided some relief amid the destruction, but the loss of farmland could have lasting consequences for households dependent on agriculture for food and income.

With the federal flood-risk period extending into October 10, authorities and residents face the added challenge of preparing for further rainfall and possible rises in water levels.

The Kwara Government has urged continued engagement with relevant authorities as it pursues both immediate relief and longer-term measures to reduce the impact of flooding on communities in Edu Local Government Area.
