Pete Edochie names ‘Things Fall Apart’ Africa’s greatest book

The veteran Nollywood actor says Chinua Achebe’s landmark novel remains unmatched in telling the African story and urges creatives to embrace their cultural identity.

Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has described Chinua Achebe’s 1958 novel, Things Fall Apart, as the greatest book ever written on the African continent, arguing that its enduring influence stems from its authentic portrayal of African life and history.

Edochie made the remarks during a recent interview with TV3, where he praised Achebe for placing African experiences at the centre of a story that has reached readers around the world.

According to the actor, the novel’s strength lies in its ability to tell the African story from an African perspective rather than through the eyes of colonial powers.

“The reason why ‘Things Fall Apart’ is the greatest book ever written on the African continent is because it is telling our own story,” Edochie said.

“If it had been telling the story of the White man, it won’t be that popular. Many others have made efforts since then but not as strong as ‘Things Fall Apart’,” he added.

The actor called on African writers and other creatives to prioritise stories rooted in the continent’s history, traditions and lived experiences, describing cultural storytelling as a distinctive strength on the global stage.

He argued that African creatives should take greater ownership of their narratives rather than allow foreign influences to overshadow their cultural identity.

Edochie also expressed concern that Africans had, in his view, allowed their talents to be submerged by overseas influences.

Reflecting on his own experience, he recalled being called by the names of foreign entertainers, including Elvis Presley and John Wayne, before deciding to embrace a name that reflected his cultural background.

“We Africans permitted our talents to be submerged by overseas influences. I remember once upon a time I was being called Elvis Presley and John Wayne,” he said.

“I actually enjoyed answering those names but at some point I had to discard them and pick a name that’s culturally relevant to me. Then I went back to the root and started answering Uwadiegwu,” he added.

Published in 1958, Things Fall Apart follows Okonkwo, a respected Igbo man whose life and community are transformed by personal tragedy, social change and the arrival of British colonial rule and Christian missionaries.

The novel explores Igbo traditions, community structures, masculinity, conflict and the consequences of colonial intervention. Its portrayal of pre-colonial society and the disruption brought by colonialism has made it a landmark work in African literature.

Achebe’s decision to tell the story through an African cultural lens helped challenge narratives that portrayed the continent as lacking complex histories and social systems.

The book has since become a widely studied work in schools and universities across the world and remains one of the most influential novels associated with African literature.

Edochie’s comments renew attention to the importance of preserving cultural identity through literature, film and other creative forms, particularly as African stories continue to reach international audiences.
